Be coached by Marathon des Sables winner Elisabet Barnes to maximise your potential and chance of success in your next event! Our coaching is tailored to your individual needs and bespoke to the challenge you have set yourself be it multi-stage desert races, mountain or road races. For your peace of mind we are qualified running coaches, certified by UK Athletics and fully insured. In addition to formal qualifications we bring a wealth of experience and we are happy to work with beginners as well as experienced runners. About our coaching services

In order to help you in the best way we can all our coaching services are bespoke and tailored to your needs. Ideally we would like to meet you in person to conduct a thorough assessment of your technique and fitness. However, we know that this may not be possible and we can also work with you virtually. 

We listen to you. We understand that you may have family and work commitments (let’s face it, most people joggle too many things!) and we work with you to help you carve out the time you need and fit it in when it works best for you. Maybe you are looking to run a Marathon at a particular time, finish your first ultra-marathon, finish or compete the Marathon des Sables or another multi-stage race. The approach we take is centred around you, your goals and your safety, and based on sound coaching principles.

You decide who you would like to have as your coach: Elisabet or Colin. Regardless of who is your lead coach we will both discuss and input to your program. Initial coaching setup with online assessment

This is where we establish your goals, preferences, training background and any particular strengths and areas for improvement. We will first ask you to complete a questionnaire and from there we will conduct an assessment over the phone to cover additional details before creating your plan. You will be able to review our conclusions and recommendations before deciding on how you wish to proceed. The setup (online or practical) is required in order for us to create a bespoke plan that fit your needs. Please note that the plan must be purchased separately.

Initial coaching setup with practical assessment

This is where we establish your goals, preferences, training background and any particular strengths and areas for improvement. We will first ask you to complete a questionnaire and from there we will arrange a time to meet and conduct a practical session together. In this session we will assess technical and fitness aspects of your running and prioritise actions for your plan that will hep you improve your running. You will be able to review our conclusions and recommendations before deciding on how you wish to proceed. The main difference from the online assessment option is that we can really pin point specific technique improvements and therefore more accurately select the fitness and technical components that will help you improve. (We can travel to you at additional cost.) The setup (online or practical) is required in order for us to create a bespoke plan that fit your needs. Please note that the plan must be purchased separately.

Detailed 8-week mesocycle plan & support

We can provide training plans with custom cycle lengths but we have chosen 8 weeks because it is a period that is sufficiently long for learning and adaptation to take place and a period which allows you to plan training and racing around upcoming commitments. We prefer to not deliver cycles that are less than 6 weeks in duration unless you are already coached by us and we have a longer term plan in which it fits. As a guide, we prefer to work with you for a minimum of 12 weeks but we recommend, depending on your event, that you intend to commit to at least 16 weeks, e.g. 2 x 8 weeks. We will establish the overall intended length of the program in the initial setup and plan the first mesocycle accordingly but of course we understand that circumstances can change.

  • Pace / activity descriptions & objectives
  • Detailed day-by-day schedule including length (distance/time), type, heart rate zone (if you wish), cross training, or rest as applicable
  • Adaptation to your plan if it doesn’t work for you
  • Feedback and Q&A session every two weeks via phone or Skype (30 minutes per session)
  • 10% Discount on kit*

Skype / Phone Consultation

This may be additional time as a complement to your training plan support, or consultation not related to a training plan. It can be about helping you to structure your own training and fit it in with your lifestyle, answering specific race preparation or race strategy questions, understanding race nutrition, get a customised kit list or simply getting some motivation and support.

Elisabet Barnes

Elisabet has over 20 years' experience of running, ran her first Marathon in 2002 and her first ultra-marathon in 2011. In 2015 she won the Marathon des Sables and set mutiple course records. Read more about her on her blog: www.ultraruneli.com

Elisabet has more than 10 years experience from Management Consulting and holds a postgraduate degree in Change Management. She understands what it’s like trying to joggle life, training and a demanding work schedule and what it takes to make changes and stick to them. She can help you identify barriers that may be preventing you from achieving your potential and help you understand how you can re-prioritise commitments to achieve your goals. Elisabet is a certified Coach in Running Fitness (CiRF) with UK Athletics.

 

Colin Barnes

Colin has 12 years' experience from the military which he gained before going into operations management and subsequently myRaceKit. His mental strength is extraordinary and he enjoys tackling long and challenging races. However he also thoroughly enjoys coaching beginners and is frequently seen at the running club sessions coaching the "Couch to 5km" programme! Colin has completed the MdS twice, the UTMB, the TDS, the Grand Union Canal Race (twice), the Ring O' Fire, many 100 milers and additional ultras and road races. His discipline and mental toughness are his key strengths.

Colin is a certified Coach in Running Fitness (CiRF) with UK Athletics.
