Desert Running Seminar London

Desert Running Seminar London - Wednesday 2nd March 2016

Join us for a fact packed evening in London with previous competitors to learn from and be inspired by. A perfect opportunity to network with other runners, maybe find some tent mates and training buddies and get your burning questions answered. Tickets available HERE.

When?
Wednesday 2nd March 2016 18:00 to 21:00. (there will be an option to catch up with other attendees at a nearby pub afterwards for those who wish)

Where?
University College London, Gower Street, WC1E 6BT (exact room details will be provided to registered participants before the event)

Who should attend?
We aim to make this as useful as possible for anyone signed up to or thinking of doing a multi-stage desert race in the future, such as the Marathon des Sables, whether you intend to set a new British record or complete it as a walker. Multi-stage desert racing can be a very different experience if you race it as an elite runner or if you walk it which may take three times as long or more. This puts different demands on your preparations, training, equipment and approach to the race.

Agenda:
There will be presentations from on various aspects of desert racing plus a panel discussion and some time for networking. Feel free to send us questions in advance and we will endeavour to make the agenda as relevant as possible. Topics include: a typical day in a desert multi-stage race, understanding the structure of the race, goal setting and how your race ambitions influences your training approach and kit choices, key training components, what happens when things don't go to plan and how to readjust your expectations.

Cost & Tickets
This event is delivered in partnership with UltraCoach. The cost is £20 and tickets can be purchased via UltraCoach here

Who will be there?

Elisabet Barnes finished 1st female in her second MdS in 2015 and 20th overall. She won all ultras she entered in 2015, including the 6 day Oman Desert Marathon, and set course records in three of them. She has helped preparing competitors running in the Sahara, Atacama, Gobi, and the Grand Canyon. She is known for her foot taping and blister treatment skills and is experienced in using trekking poles for running. In 2016 Elisabet is doing several stage races including The Coastal Challenge in Costa Rica, the Marathon des Sables and the Big Red Run in Australia. Read her blog here: www.ultraruneli.com

Colin Barnes is the co-owner of myRaceKit and has completed the MdS twice, in 2012 (149th) and in 2014 (186th). With 12 years' military experience Colin is known for his exceptional mental strength. He excels at adapting race plans and tackling the mental aspects of ultra endurance. His track record is impressive with finishes in UTMB, TDS, 2xGUCR, numerous 100 milers and other ultras...  Colin is a certified UKA Coach In Running Fitness.

Susie Chan is an endurance runner and triathlete. She will happily run anything from 1 to 100 miles but her favourite races are multistage ultras. She has completed the MdS twice, first in 2013 and then upping her game, setting off with the elites in 2015! Susie shared a tent with Danny Kendall this year and she might reveal what was really in his backback! She is possibly the most positive person you'll have ever met, how does it help her racing? Forthcoming events include the Jungle Ultra in Peru. Link to Susie's Blog

Shaun Marsden started ultra running to impress a girl. He must have done something right as 2 years later that girl (above!) is now his fiancé after he proposed to her at the finish line of MdS this year. Ring O' Fire and Winter 100 are some of the other notable races Shaun has finished, with the Arctic Ultra in Sweden and the Jungle Ultra in Peru on the calendar for June 2016. Shaun had some unexpected setbacks during this year's MdS and had to dig deep. Learn how he managed to change his race plan and finish.
